Al-Hijama or also called Extraction is an ancient alternative therapy that belongs to traditional natural medicine and prophetic medicine.
This cupping therapy was first practiced by the Egyptian people, according to some engravings in tombs, temples, etc. It has also been used since ancient times in various civilizations, such as the Eastern one, especially in China and the Arabian Peninsula.
Animal horns were used as suction cups, creating a vacuum to suck in the air; the Easterners used to use bamboo. Currently the suction cup that we know made of glass is used.
Al-Hijama, which is part of the Sunna or the wet Hijama practiced by Muslims, has been recognized by the WHO since 2004 as a healing medicine.
Al-Hijama is a therapeutic method widely used in prophetic medicine and can cure many ailments.
The Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
"In fact in the extraction (hijama) there is a cure." [Saheeh Muslim (5706)].
It consists of placing suction cups at certain points of the body, in order to cause local congestion , exerting negative pressure with air. Generally, suction cups are placed in various areas of the body such as the abdomen, legs or arms. But the most common area is in the upper part of the back. There are specific points on the body where cupping should be applied for each ailment.
The suction cups, usually made of glass, are heated internally with fire. When you place the suction cup on an area of the skin, the hot air begins to cool and a partial vacuum forms inside. The pressure difference between the inside and outside air ends up generating a suction force. In this way the suction cup helps to stimulate certain areas, attracting blood flow, stimulating tissues and internal organs .
There are two types of Hijama:
- Dry Hijama: consists of using suction cups to stimulate blood
- Wet Hijama: consists of removing the suction cup after stimulating the blood and attracting it to the surface and then using a specific scalpel to make small superficial cuts that are neither noticeable nor painful nor leave a scar and replace the suction cups that will end up extracting this blood out.
This blood comes out completely dark and coagulated, that is, in very bad condition.
It is worth mentioning that there are studies and clinical tests that ensure that the blood that comes out when practicing Hijama has nothing to do with the blood we donate, for example.
Who should practice Hijama?:
It is generally indicated for adult men and women with menopause and especially for elite athletes since it helps increase performance, but it should not be applied to certain people such as pregnant women, small children, weak people, who are taking anticoagulants. Its practice can be preventive and also healing.
Benefits of Al-Hijama:
- Removes dead blood cells from the circulatory system, purifies the blood and increases red and white blood cells.
- Cleans veins, arteries and capillaries.
