Ayurvedic remedy that acts as a powerful antioxidant, helps to lose weight, improves mood and sexual enhancer.
Saffron slightly stimulates serotonin, improving mood and removing anxiety, which translates into benefits when dieting. Antioxidant (heart and eye protector, helps concentration, memory loss and senile dementia).
Increases the mobility of sperm.
SAFFRON (Crocus sativus)
The pistils or female parts of the flower are used.
It is cultivated in North America, Greece, Austria, England, Eastern countries, Morocco and some other areas of Africa.
The main components are:
• Carotenoids heterosides, among which crocin stands out, mainly responsible for its coloring power. In addition, there are others from crocetin.
• Other carotenoids are alpha and beta-carotene, lycopene and zeaxanthin.
• In addition, it contains a bitter principle, picrocrocoside or picrocrocin, which when hydrolyzed gives rise to safranal, which constitutes the main component of the volatile fraction (0.6%) and is responsible for its characteristic odor.
At an experimental level, it has been verified that it has lipid-lowering, cytotoxic, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective and tissue oxygenating action.
Crocetin, administered intramuscularly, is capable of reducing the incidence of atherosclerosis and halving serum cholesterol levels in rats fed hypercholesterolemic diets. In addition, it has been found that in the regions where saffron is consumed daily there is a lower incidence of cardiovascular diseases.
Crocetin is also capable of increasing the diffusion rate of oxygen in the plasma, which results in a net increase in oxygen available to capillary endothelial cells, brain, lung, and muscle tissue, etc. Crocin has a neuroprotective effect. Eupeptic and aperitif action due to picrocrocoside or picrocrocin.
Regarding the cytotoxic activity of saffron, it has been found that the alcoholic extract is capable of inhibiting the growth of HeLa human tumor cells.
It activates sperm motility as seen in an experiment with deer. Therefore, it is a sexual response enhancer.
It helps to lose weight, since it stimulates serotonin and removes the anxiety of eating, especially between meals, which is why it is useful in weight loss diets. Improves mood, reduces stress and helps sleep better.
It is also digestive, aperitif, eupeptic, liver protector and hypoglycemic. It is choleretic, helps the gallbladder function and digest fats.
Good antioxidant (Alzheimer's, dementia, lack of concentration, memory loss). In cardiovascular disorders, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, high cholesterol.
It is used in macular degeneration, improving vision. In a clinical study, the effect of short-term saffron supplementation (20 mg daily for 3 months) was evaluated in patients with early macular degeneration, demonstrating an improvement in retinal function, compared to the placebo group.
It is emmenagogue and antispasmodic, in dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome.
A supplement indicated for men and women.
